IN JANUARY 2008, RSPCA INSPECTORS RESCUED 111 HORSES, PONIES AND DONKEYS, THAT WERE FOUND IN APPALLING CONDITIONS ON A BUCKINGHAMSHIRE FARM.

In January 2008, RSPCA Inspectors rescued 111 horses, ponies and donkeys, that were found in appalling conditions on a Buckinghamshire farm.

Coco is pony of the month

Coco is a knabstrup.

This breed originally came from Denmark. They are intelligent and quick to learn which is why they were often chosen to perform in the circus. 

Coco used to be in the circus and is always entertaining the others with her tricks from her past. She has a great sense of humour and is always making the others laugh. She is full of energy and can't keep still she's always busy doing something.

The Sugar Cubes ponies

There are 12 ponies altogether, they all have their own personalities, breeds and star signs. It all started because my pony mad daughters wanted anything they saw with horses on. 

I wanted to create some cute ponies to put on T shirts. We started round the kitchen table and we all drew a pony, I put all the best bits together and we called him Sugar Cubes.

 Then I couldn't stop drawing ponies and we ended up with 12. Their personalities come from their breeds for example the Knabstrup breed is intelligent and quick to learn so they were used in the              circus hence Coco who will clown around and make the other ponies laugh she's also the best at opening the stable doors and gates.

Half term

Hope everyone is enjoying the school hols. I went up to Scotland to stay by the sea. It was a lovely evening and we went out for a canoe, the porpoise came and swam around us, they're amazing and you can hear them snort the water out of their blow holes when they come out the water. 

We're back in the office and packing and sending out the orders so everything is up to date and out of here. This week seems to be a diamante week with the zip up jackets being the fave.

Story - There's a new 'Easter hunt' story to read yourself or get your mum to read it at bedtime. Bake - We found this great pony cake to make, have a go and send us a picture.

Easter egg hunt - get some friends round, hide some eggs have your own egg hunt in the garden if it's nice.

Monty is pony of the month

Monty is April's pony of the month 

his birthday is April 17th  

Aries ;  March 21st- April 19th

He is a polo pony. He's very determined and nothing gets in his way. He's a good leader and likes to tell everyone what to do. If he doesn't get enough exercise he starts annoying everyone. He has a soft spot for Thistle and is afraid of the vet.

I've just finished the new Sugar Cubes mail order catalogue and it's gone to the printers. We should have it back next Wednesday and then it will be all hands on deck getting them into the envelopes and out to everyone on our mailing list. It's so exciting for me to see the new catalogue arrive it's a big difference from being on my computer screen to being a catalogue. Are the colours right? did we miss anything? see what mistakes I made, it doesn't matter how much we check there's always at least one!

A new story from the Sugar Cubes storybook

It was Saturday evening and Sugar Cubes trotted importantly into the barn, he had heard the girls in the yard talking and he had some exciting news.

“Hey everyone listen up. Tomorrow’s 9 o’clock lesson is starting an hour earlier at 9 o’clock,” he said.

“?!, but it’s always at 9 o’clock” said a confused Wishes.

“Yes but this week 9 o’clock is an hour earlier.” He was starting to confuse himself, but he was sure that’s what he’d overheard the girls say, though now when he repeated it, it did sound a bit odd.

“How can that be?” asked Indie.

“We lose an hour in the night,” said Sugar Cubes,” that’s what the girls said.”

“Who lost an hour?” Obi, who had been nodding off, was now fully awake and very interested, he was always losing things and getting the blame if things went missing.

“It wasn’t me, I didn’t do anything.”

“The night lost the hour,” repeated Sugar Cubes.

“Did somebody steal it?” said an excited Daisy looking around for a thief.

“Ze day has stolen it,” stated Jacques, who knew practically everything.

“The day? How did the day steal an hour from the night?” Daisy was very interested now.

“Well actually it was the sun who stole it for the day,” explained Thistle who liked to go one better than Jacques. “It’s started to rise earlier and it’s been pinching a bit every day, but now it’s taken a whole hour. Haven’t you noticed how the day is getting longer?”

“Yes I have!” squeaked Daisy “I’ve been waking earlier with more to do.”

“That’s not fair” complained Pebbles who loved to sleep in as long as she could in the morning. “That’s just greedy of the sun. Why did the day let the night steal it?”

“I will go and get it back for you Pebbles,” declared a concerned Daisy she didn’t like to see Pebbles upset.

“It’s OK,” shouted Thistle as Daisy was heading out of the barn. “Come back, little one, the night steals it back in the Autumn so it’s quite fair, they share it half a year each.”

The barn was silent while the ponies pondered this thought.

“I like it best when the day has it,” said Daisy. “It means I have longer to fit in all the things I want to do.”

Sinbad and Monty nodded in agreement.

“I get bored in the dark evenings,” moaned Monty who hated to be still, it put him in a terrible mood when he didn’t get enough exercise.

“I’m with Pebbles,” declared Wishes, “I like my beauty sleep and need lots of it.”

“You mean the day is longer so we have to get up earlier?” asked Obi, by now thoroughly confused. “I think I prefer shorter days but longer evenings so we have more time to ourselves in the field,” he added.

“No, it doesn’t work like that” said Sugar Cubes beginning to lose his patience. “Just be quiet and go to sleep. We have to get up an hour earlier in the morning.”

“Well,” said Thistle, “there’s one thing I know for sure, there’s always one mum who forgets and brings her little one an hour late for their lesson.”

“I hope it’s mine,” said Pebbles.

Hi, there's a gorgeous FREE Mother's day card to print off, up on the site. Find it in the webmag under the colouring in section. It has a picture of a mare and her foal so very appropriate to Mother's day. It's really special for your mum if you've coloured it in yourself and there's lots of dafodils so you can make it really bright and cheerful. For everyone who loves the glossy bag I have designed a print with all 12 ponies just as bright and colourful to go on T's hoodies and bags. This gorgeous colourful print has puff flowers and a shiny ribbon. It looks just as good on the strong turquoise and fushia of the hoodie as it does on the pastel colours of the T's. So there must be something here to suit any little girl. 

Personalisation seems to be popular so we will make this option available on the fuschia and sapphire gym bags. Great for school.

Reflective designs

I just love this reflective transfer paper. We buy it in and then cut out our designs with a plotter cutter, and then use a heat press to put them on the tops. It looks great on the back of the Arab moon hoodies it really glows out in the field when it catches the light. I work from my loft and at night when I walk up the stairs just before I put the light on the new Arab T's which are hanging up with bits of reflective text on them are glowing like little lights it is amazing stuff.

I'm trying to think what I can do with it next for the little ones.

NEW sugar pony

The first range from 'sugar pony' it's new, bright and cool enough for the discerning teenager. As they're growing up we know they would like something different from the little ones. We will keep 'sugar pony' seperate from the Sugar Cubes pony characters.

 

 We've started with a bright clear cut out image of an Arab horse, on the hoodies it's silhouetted against the moon.

 All 3 hoodies have the same reflective image on the back which when it catches the light looks fantastic. The white looks very cool and is very in at the moment. The turquoise is deffinately for those not afraid to stand out in the crowd with a good sense of fun, the neon pink looks great on this hoodie. The black is very stylish for the serious fashionista's. 

With coordinating T's with the horse itself being printed as a silhouette in contrast to the moon being the print on the hoodies.  They look great I'm really pleased with them, let me know what you think. 

NEW Stanley

Hi we have some new tops and gym bags featuring Stanley the patient little pony, previously seen on the 'rather be...' bags. 

He's in a navy print on the white hoodie which are very in at the moment and much more practical  in white on the navy hoodie, both are gorgeous, even if I do say so myself!

Pony of the month is Jacques

Jacques is our pony of the month he is a Camargue from the Rhone delta in France. He can be a bit of a know-it-all and gets carried away with some good cause or another. He's helpful and good at explaining things. If any of the other ponies want to know something they always say "Ask Jacques, he'll know"

Reflective 30% Off

We are doing a February special on all the REFLECTIVE products on the site. The hoodies are really cool and kids love them. Parents love them too when they see how bright they shine in car headlights, which is why the Bac pac is so great. When worn on the back walking home from school in these still darker days it's a great help to see how bright they glow.  

 

women's sizes

We all know I'm not the only one with sizing problems, it's everyone's problem! Looks like ">George at Asda are having a go at doing something about it for women and adding 'in-between' sizes. How will they fit them all on the rails? Good luck to them I suppose it will give us more chance of finding clothes to fit.

Help with Sizes please

Hi, I need some help please. I have a small business called Sugar Cubes, for girls who love ponies. I need help with the sizes, we have been going five years now and we’re definitely getting closer to the right size for the age, but it’s very difficult.

When I started I thought it would be easy, I bought things from big companies, M&S, C&A, BHS etc to follow the sizing, but they were so different it was obvious there wasn’t a right way to do it.

We buy in T’s and tops to print on, from manufacturer’s ready made collections, and we have to convert their neck label sizes  to the ages we found works. So our size L which fits an 11-12 year old is a ladies size 8.  This has an S in the back of the neck ( Small adult) but  is our size L, so it’s very confusing (confused already right!) when the customer orders an L and then gets an S.

We have found we are going bigger than the manufacturers recommended size in the label, but we only ever get things back because they are too small!

What I would like to do is start a SIZES campaign and get as many mum’s as possible to measure their daughters ages 2-16 years and send me the numbers. I want age, height, chest, waist and hips in cm or inches.

Let’s see if we can make some sense of it.

Pink for girls?

There is an article published on the Telegraph site today about Pink toys creating a generation of pushy princesses. Well from my experience it's been the other way round and this is definately not a new thing. Both my daughters went through a completely pink phase before the age of 4 and that's 14 years ago. 

When we first started Sugar Cubes it wasn't very pink, and people said how nice it was not to be pink. But, all we sold was pink, so if I wanted to survive I had to do pink. We offer other colours as much as possible but we can't afford to stock many, we just wouldn't sell them. Look at My little pony it's been amazing for the last 25 years, I don't have a pink pony, looks like it's about time I got one.

so cold

Just when it started to get a bit warmer it's freezing again, my pony doesn't usually come in at night but she has been very happy to come in recently. It's like a game none of them want to be last in it's quite funny. The ponies which are already in look out over their stable doors very smuggly as the later one walk in. I'm often the last depending on kids and school collections and of course work ( not a good time to ring Sugar Cubes - school pick up time) so Diamond is out waiting at the gate to her field in the dark, when she sees me coming she neighs and then walks off in the opposite direction. I wait for her to do a big circle and decide she really does want to come in for her tea! food is all they think about, right! Then she hurries in checks out her food looks over her door ( which she can only just reach and you see the whites of her eyes as she stretches to look over) at the others and goes back to her tea. I love her she's very cool. 

I'm busy working on new designs but don't forget to check out the old one's as there are some good deals on the site at the moment.

Wishes is pony of the month

Wishes is a little Shetland from the Sugar Cubes stable, she is very popular with all the new riders and she loves attention. Her favourite thing is to be brushed, she could be brushed all day, and treats of course, but not too many or she will get poorly. Find out more on the web site.

Winter walk

On Saturday when all our visitors had left we went for a lovely crisp cold walk up Clee Hill which is our favourite local dog walk. The sky was blue and the ground was frosty, the view from the top was great, and to top it all we saw the wild ponies and I had my camera with me.

I feel inspired to start my next pony print see it soon on the site!

Back to Sugar Cubes

Hi, I'm really happy to be back at my desk. It's been a great Christmas and very busy with lots of family around, but now I just want to get back to work. We have so much to do and I'm very excited about 2009. I need to design new prints, new diamante and new reflective so want to get stuck in, I'm not quite free yet as still 2 children to get back to school 1 gone today, 1 tomorrow and last goes back on Wednesday, then I can really get my head around things. The Wishes dreaming of ponies diamante turned out to be our best yet so I hope there are a lot of happy girls out there.
